- How do I calculate my max heart rate?
- The best-known rule of thumb is 220 minus age. Better validated is the Tanaka formula: 208 minus 0.7 times age. At 50 that gives 173 instead of 170, at 70 it gives 159 instead of 150; especially at higher ages the rule of thumb clearly underestimates max heart rate. For women there is additionally the Gulati formula (206 minus 0.88 times age), validated on over 5,000 women, while the standard formulas come mostly from male data. All formulas are population estimates though. If your sports watch has ever recorded a higher value in a genuinely hard effort, that measured value is the better basis.
- What is zone 2 and why is everyone talking about it?
- Zone 2 is the range of roughly 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate: easy enough to sustain for a long time, demanding enough to trigger adaptation. This is where you train fat metabolism and mitochondria, the aerobic base everything else builds on. Endurance research and many training plans therefore put the bulk of training volume exactly here. The surprise for many: zone 2 feels slower than you expect.
- How do I find my zone 2 heart rate?
- By calculation: 60 to 70 percent of your max heart rate, or more precisely with your resting heart rate via the Karvonen method. That is exactly what this tool shows you live. Out on the road, the talk test helps: in zone 2 you can still speak in full sentences and usually breathe through your nose. If only short sentences work, you are already in zone 3.
- What is the Karvonen method and why is it more precise?
- The Karvonen method computes zones not as a share of max heart rate but as a share of your heart rate reserve, the span between resting and max heart rate: target = resting HR + percentage × (max HR − resting HR). This factors in your training state, since a low resting heart rate is a fitness marker. Two people with the same max but different resting heart rates get different, more individual zones. The tool shows the difference directly: switch the resting heart rate on and the zone bands shift.
- How do I measure my resting heart rate properly?
- In the morning right after waking, still lying down, before coffee, phone or stress get involved. Either via a watch or classically: count for 30 seconds at your wrist and multiply by two. Measure across several days and take the typical value, not the one outlier. Many sports watches average this overnight automatically; that value works well too.
- Do the zones apply equally to every sport?
- Not quite. Max heart rate is sport-specific: on the bike it is usually five to ten beats lower than running, in the pool a bit lower still, because less muscle mass works and body position differs. If you train by heart rate in several sports, it pays to know your max per sport and compute zones with it. For getting started, the formula estimate is still a usable common baseline.
- How accurate are these zones really?
- Honestly: these are informed estimates, not measurements. Age formulas scatter a good ten beats around the true max, and the zone boundaries themselves are conventions, not constants of nature. Medication such as beta blockers shifts everything, and with cardiovascular conditions training ranges belong in medical hands.
