When AI Agents Become Attack Vectors: Supply Chain Attacks in the Age of Autonomous Tools

In early 2026, over 300 malicious skills were discovered on ClawHub, one of the most popular marketplaces for AI agent extensions. Disguised as useful productivity tools. Installed by teams who simply wanted to work more efficiently.
Particularly affected: small and mid-sized businesses that eagerly try new AI tools, often without dedicated security expertise and without understanding what they are actually bringing into their systems.
What Happened
ClawHub works like an app store for AI agents. You install skills, extensions that give the agent new capabilities: managing files, sending emails, running social media channels, tracking crypto portfolios. For a small business, this sounds fantastic: an AI assistant that becomes a social media manager, bookkeeper, or analyst with just a few clicks.
The problem: hundreds of these skills were fakes. They looked professional, had plausible descriptions, and promised exactly the features small teams are looking for. But in the background, they loaded malware through multiple stages so it would not be noticed immediately. In the end, malware landed on the machine that harvested passwords, browser data, and stored credentials. On Mac and Windows alike.
Why Small Businesses Are Particularly at Risk
Large enterprises have security teams that evaluate new tools, approval processes, and network monitoring. In a 10-person startup or a small agency, reality looks different. Someone tries a new AI tool because a LinkedIn post recommended it. Installation takes two minutes. Nobody reviews the source code. Why would they? It is just a skill for the AI assistant.
This is exactly where the danger lies. AI agents are no longer harmless chat windows. Modern agents have file system access, can execute commands, call APIs, and interact with other systems. When such an agent loads a compromised skill, it does not happen in an isolated sandbox. It happens on the work machine, with the user’s full permissions.
The dynamics are different from traditional security risks:
- AI agents execute tools autonomously, without a human seeing or confirming every single call
- Users intuitively trust AI recommendations. When the agent wants to use a skill, hardly anyone questions it
- A compromised skill can reach other tools in the system, multiplying the damage
- Small teams rarely have the resources to monitor suspicious behavior from their AI tools
We Have Seen This Before. Haven’t We?
Anyone who works in software development recognizes the pattern. Compromised packages in npm registries, malicious libraries on PyPI. Supply chain attacks are nothing new. But with AI agents, the risk is amplified: a compromised npm package runs in the context of a build process. A compromised AI skill runs in the context of an agent operating on the user’s work machine, with access to everything that machine has to offer.
Imagine this: an employee installs a “productivity skill” for their AI assistant. The skill is supposed to summarize files and draft emails. For that, it needs access to documents and email. Sounds reasonable. What nobody notices: in the background, the skill also reads customer lists, contracts, and credentials. The agent does this without asking, because it falls within its granted permissions.
For a small business, this can be existentially threatening. Customer data stolen, access credentials compromised, and in the worst case a GDPR violation with reporting obligations and fines. All because someone installed a seemingly harmless tool.
What the Community Is Doing
The security community has responded. There are first open-source scanners that check AI skills for known attack patterns. OWASP, known for its top-10 lists of the most common web vulnerabilities, is working on a dedicated framework for AI agent security. At the marketplace level, measures like mandatory reviews and reputation systems for publishers are being discussed.
These are the right approaches, but let us be honest: we are in an early phase. There is no comprehensive, proven solution yet. And small businesses in particular cannot afford to wait until the ecosystem has sorted out its security problems.
What Teams Can Do Today
The good news: you do not have to be a security expert to avoid the biggest risks. Five measures any team can implement:
- Grant permissions consciously. Does the AI agent really need access to the entire file system? Usually, a restricted folder is enough. Fewer permissions mean less damage if something goes wrong.
- Require confirmation for critical actions. When the agent wants to write files, send emails, or access external services: ask first, execute second. It costs a few seconds but can prevent a lot.
- Do not blindly install skills. Just like any software: where does the skill come from? Who published it? Are there reviews? When in doubt, it is better to go without than to give an unknown tool system access.
- Log what the agent does. Even simple logging helps. When you can trace which tools the agent called and what happened during those calls, problems can be identified much faster.
- Run AI agents in isolation. Where possible, do not run the agent on the primary work machine. A separate environment like a container, a VM, or even just a dedicated user account limits potential damage significantly.
Conclusion: Enthusiasm Needs Prudence
AI agents are a huge productivity gain, especially for small teams that need to achieve a lot with limited resources. But every new capability you give an agent also extends the attack surface. The ClawHub incident shows that attackers have understood this and are deliberately exploiting the enthusiasm with which teams adopt new tools.
European regulatory frameworks like the GDPR offer useful guidance here. The principles of transparency, purpose limitation, and accountability apply not only to personal data. They serve as a good compass for handling any system you grant access to sensitive information. Those who view data security as an integral part of how they work, rather than an afterthought, are better positioned.
The question is not whether small businesses should use AI agents. Of course they should. The question is whether they take the five minutes it requires to do it safely. Because the difference between a productive AI assistant and a security risk often lies in one conscious decision.
